Serum IgE Levels in Adults with Liver Disease and in Childhood HBV Carriers

Abstract
Hypergammaglobulinemia is a prominent feature of chronic liver diseases and might be due to autoimmune mechanism associated with T cell activation, accompanies by chronic stimulation and/or enhanced B cell functions. The purpose the study is to
elucidate possible relationship between IgE production and chronic antigenic stimulation with hepatitis B virus(HBV) and/or autoimmune responsiveness in liver disease.
By using PRIST total IgE levels were measured in sera from 37 adults with hepatitis A or B, 11 adults with hepatocellular carcinoma, 4 adults with fatty liver and 17 children carrying HBV. The results were compared with those from the 20 healthy
normal
adults and 20 healthy normal children respectively.
@ES The results of the study were as follows:
@EN 1) Serum IgE was apparently increased in patients with liver disease and HBV carrier when compared to that in normal control group(p<0.05).
2) Generally serum IgE level was significantly higher in patients with HBeAg than in patients without HBeAg(p<0.05).
3) There was no significant correlation between serum IgE level and duration of carrying HBV.
In conclusion, these results partly suggested that chronic antigenic stimulation was meaningfully involved in the production of IgE in the patients with chronic liver disease such as HBV carrier in addition to the state shown in allergic
subjects,
and
need further studies.
